Méndez-Leite looks at the life and career of Carmen Maura in ‘¡Ay, Carmen!’

10/23/2018.- On Tuesday 23rd October, the Time of History section hosted the out-of-competition premiere of the documentary ¡Ay Carmen! by Fernando Méndez-Leite, which focuses on actress Carmen Maura, who attended the screening to present the film alongside the filmmaker and the director of Valladolid International Film Festival, Javier Angulo.

In the documentary, the actress talks about her career and about herself, her childhood, her vocation, her first steps in the profession, her hardships and her way of living and working, with her unique sense of humour, sincerity and intelligence.

Fernando Méndez-Leite studied Scriptwriting and Directing at the Official School of Cinematography in Madrid. He worked at TVE on the programmes Galería (1973-1974), Cultura (1975) and Imágenes (1978-1981), alongside Pilar Chamarro, and La noche del cine español (1983-1985), as well as directing several episodes of the series Cuentos y leyendas and some of the Sonatas by Valle Inclán. He has been the general director of the ICAA (1986-1988) and director of the Madrid Film School (ECAM). As a filmmaker, he directed El hombre de moda in 1980 (screened at the 25th edition of the festival) and the documentary El productor (2006), dedicated to Elías Querejeta.
